Why we use 15-lb sign-grade HDU

Our standard routed sign work uses 15-pound high-density urethane. The density is part of the material specification; it is not the finished sign thickness. A project may use different board thicknesses depending on size, routing depth, mounting and the visual depth the design needs.

HDU is useful for dimensional signage because it machines cleanly, accepts carved or routed texture, does not have natural wood grain that can split unpredictably, and does not rot. That makes it well suited to shaped sign panels, raised-copy signs, recessed lettering, faux woodgrain backgrounds and layered dimensional work.

Density, thickness and routing depth are different things

Density describes the grade of the foam. Thickness describes how thick the sheet is before routing. Routing depth describes how much material is removed. Those three values must be considered together because deep routing into a thin board leaves less material behind the cut.

We review broad spans, hanging signs, mounting points and deep pockets before production so the design leaves appropriate material where it is needed.
