CNC routing removes selected areas of the panel to create depth. The machine can pocket a background around raised letters, recess lettering into the face, cut a border, shape the outside perimeter or create a repeatable texture. These operations can be combined with separately cut letters and logo pieces for a more dimensional result.
The design should use depth intentionally. Too many layers can make the message difficult to read and expensive to finish. A strong panel normally has a clear primary message, one supporting level and controlled decorative detail. We review the file for tool access, minimum feature sizes and practical paint separation before manufacturing.

Raised Copy Versus Recessed Copy
Raised copy is created by routing the surrounding background lower while leaving letters and graphics at the original face height. It produces a carved-sign appearance and can make the main name feel substantial. Recessed copy is cut into the face of the panel. It is often cleaner and simpler to paint, especially when the recessed areas are filled with a contrasting color.
The choice depends on the brand style, letter size and viewing distance. Fine serif lettering may not be suitable for deep raised routing, while bold copy can carry stronger relief. Recessed details must be wide enough for the selected cutter. We can identify file features that need to be enlarged, simplified or changed to an applied element.

Panel Thickness and Finish Levels
Thickness affects routing depth, edge profile and the physical presence of the sign. A deeper carve requires enough remaining material behind the routed area. Very large panels may need design changes, backing or a different installation approach depending on span and support. The local installer or engineer is responsible for determining the final structural method at the site.
Trade shops can purchase a raw routed panel and apply their own primer, paint and graphics. Primed components may be quoted as an intermediate step. Direct buyers typically request a fully painted panel based on an approved color schedule. Finishing labor can exceed cutting labor on detailed signs because each color transition, small letter and texture requires additional hand work.

Artwork That Routes Cleanly
A production file needs closed vector shapes, clean overlaps and a known scale. Fonts should be converted to outlines so the file does not change when opened on another system. Lines that represent a border must have real width; a hairline stroke is not automatically a routable channel. Identify intended depths and which areas remain raised.
A rendering alone does not tell the machine where to cut. Include a dimensioned drawing or notes that separate visual color from physical depth. For complex signs, a simple layer key—background, raised copy, recessed detail, applied part—can prevent confusion. Routed panels are used for subdivision entrances, churches, farms, professional offices, parks, restaurants and replacement monument faces.

How a Project Moves From Idea to Shipment
A successful custom sign order is a controlled manufacturing process rather than an instant print job. The first step is identifying the finished result: what the sign or letters must say, where they will be used, the overall size, quantity, visual style and delivery location. Direct business customers can describe the appearance in ordinary language. Sign shops can provide technical specifications, vector files and production notes. Either approach is acceptable as long as the final scope becomes clear before cutting begins.
We review the information for manufacturability and quoting. That review may identify narrow letter strokes, unsupported areas, unrealistic depths, incomplete dimensions or artwork that needs to be converted into clean vector paths. The written quote states the component being supplied, material, thickness, finish, quantity, packaging and shipping. An approval drawing or documented specification then becomes the production reference. The customer should check spelling, dimensions, colors, quantities and sidedness carefully because custom products are manufactured specifically for that order.
After approval and payment requirements are completed, material is allocated and the project enters production. CNC work may include outside profiling, pocket routing, v-carving, texture, holes and separate dimensional layers. Parts are sanded and prepared for the finish listed in the quote. Completed work is inspected, photographed when appropriate and packaged to protect edges and painted surfaces. Shipment details are provided according to the agreed delivery method. Field measurements, permits, structural supports and installation remain the responsibility of the customer or installer unless those services are expressly included in writing.

A photograph or rough idea is enough to begin a conversation, but accurate pricing requires specifics. Include the exact finished width and height, quantity, whether the sign is single- or double-sided, and whether you need raw components or a fully finished product. Supply the best logo file available and list every paint color by code when possible. For replacement faces, provide straight-on photographs, the opening measurements, recess depth and mounting details. For dimensional letters, include the desired letter height, overall line width and installation surface.
Shipping can influence construction and packaging, especially for large panels or fragile shapes. Include the delivery ZIP code, whether the location is commercial or residential, and whether a loading dock or forklift is available for freight. Also tell us the required date. A requested date is not guaranteed until production and transit are confirmed, but early notice helps identify the correct shipping method. Complete information reduces back-and-forth, prevents assumptions and produces a quote that clearly states what will arrive.
